Turkey walk
Pam & I walked a half marathon on Thanksgiving day. WE decided that $85 each was too much for the official annual Atlanta Marathon/Half always on T-day, so we did one on our own. We walk downtown ATL from Decatur, hooked up with the course as they came back from Buckhead, and walk to Buckhead on Peachtree St, cheering on the 1/2 marathoners, then the full when they got to us. That was a great day on the roads.

Ira Melton closed again
The last batch of rain that went thru dumped even more sand into IRA. It is not fun to ride thru, so you might want to stay out for awhile. While some of the trails are good, we are gonna eliminate the worst areas, start over on a layout, and utilize the "high ground" closer to Desmond. When we start building this, we will let you know.....Good for running still.

Industrial Park MTB Trilogy
Just got back from completing the trifecta of trails at the Industrial Park system. First I rode the easiest trail, the TOWER. Very fun, twisty, and fast. Then across the street to the hidden entrance of DODGE'M. A little hillier, more technical, swoopy. Then a short road ride to T2! This is the mother of trails in the trifecta. Very hilly, steep switchbacks, awesome, awesome! Some plank bridges, rock gardens, roots, a few log dismounts, etc. Nothing real scary, but enough to possibly freak you out. I will be leading tours of this system, as well as the North Decatur Singletrack system. Call 920-371-2227 for a reservation

N Decatur ST open
After all the flooding in the area, trail crews have been out cleaning the local trails. I have cleaned most of the North Decatur singletrack. Mason Mill is in good shape. Plate of spaghetti trails are in the best condition they ever have been! I spent two days in there raking, cutting, moving debris. Ira B Melton (Gooberhacks) needs a lot of work and is still flooded in some spots. DO NOT go in there yet. I will be going out to Industrial Trails this week to check them out. They should be OK, as the location is not near creeks. South Fulton White roads moonlight light tonight. Leave from Lil 5 at 6pm. Park behind Junkmans Daughter for car pool.

These have been my favorite rides so far here. WEIRD will be adding more off road options, and there are some sweet hilly dirt roads west of town for a nice brevet (series??). Lets here from you...What are your fav's?
Clean up your plate!
Post rain storm trail cleanup of "Plate of Spaghetti" trail, and minor clearing in Mason Mill. This week after the heavy stuff clears. Call 920-371-2227 for times, or check back soon.
Officially a city rider
I completed my city initiation into the cycling community by competing in FM24, a 24 hour urban adventure. I did 20 laps in 23 hr 36 min. 12 mile course. I did the first three laps on my fixie/no brakes. Then my TRI bike until dark, when I rode my trike recumbent 4 laps. Finished stron on the TRI bike. There is such a huge market for these types of "underground" events. Exactly what WEIRD has been doing for the last 16 years, and with terrain to boot!! Look for some new WEIRD events coming soon. ATL has gotten pounded by rain the last week, and our in town trails will need some cleaning.

DIRT ITP
I've finally found some off road trails inside the perimeter. These are close to Decatur and can ride to them from home. Yahoo!! WEIRD will offer tours and skill classes on these trails. WEIRD will also do some night trail riding on these. There are 4 larger mtb parks just outside the perimeter that WEIRD will be offering tours and classes on should we get a larger group. WEIRD is working on putting some singletrack down on the miles of linear park space around town. There is already some interest and movement on connecting the neighborhoods with dirt paths. You just have to know where to look. More to follow on this initiative.....

Do the Du or Di
multi sport participants will find this one to their liking. Bike and run. Or Run and bike. Maybe swim and bike. One thing for sure is a transition, or a "brick", as the pro's call it. Change of gear will be required, or bike in your running shoes?? Your call. Transition area will be monitored for security. Respond for times and locations

sticking to roots
WEIRD is sticking to its roots and is going to start offering WEIRD tours to Atlantans. There is no way WEIRD can become GEIRD. WEIRD is what sells. There are over 100 club rides a month here. It seems everyone here identifies themselves as a triathlete. People are looking for a safe and unique way to enjoy the exercise of choice. There are not as many off road options for WEIRD inside the perimeter. I have been out to Conyers, at the International Horse Park, where the very first MTB Olympic venue was held in 1996. There is a nice trail system 11 miles from home, kinda like Triangle/Bairds, but signed and longer hills, called Yellow River Trails. There are a lot of linear parks inside the perimeter. Narrow, deep valleys, great for scrambling around. As we get settled with ByBicycles, WEIRD will arise, like a phoenix..

WEIRD meet up
I am going to use the "meet up" business model for some of my events. There is a huge market for the GEIRD workouts, as I've been finding out on the local hammerfests. They will most likely be nightly or a few nights a week at 7pm out of the Decatur MARTA stop. Most rides start at 630 here, where as in my old home town they'd get going about 5:30. They will be promoted and invitations will come from meetup.com. It's very cool. There is a "meet up" for just about anything you could want. More to follow.

Its time
We've been here 1 month! What a ride we've had so far. There is so much opportunity here, its hard to contain ourselves. We got overtaken by a pack of inline skaters the other night. There was like 30 in the pack as they swallowed us up on our trike tandem. There are alleycats galore. Fixies everywhere. And lots of riders use toe clips here?? I have found some dirt paths in the greenspaces, but have not ridden my MTB's yet. There are 4 nice mtb parks within 1 hour of our home in Decatur. Remember they had the Olympics here a few years back. So there is the olympic CC course at Conyers horse park. They say it's very sweet. Soon, WEIRD will arise, like a pheonix......

settling in
It is time to start getting busy. I am going to focus my attention on bicycle advocacy while I learn the streets and trails. I will be sending most of my blog information to our buisness blog at www.bybicycles.blogspot.com. It might be a few weeks until I feel comfortable leading WEIRD tours. We have identified there is a need for clunker club here, so the CCC and the CCC will take place here in Decatur. The possibilities are unlimited.

Free bikes
Cruising around Emory U we noticed these commuter bikes for let. Nice urban comfort bikes with metal racks and locks. A very bike friendly university. Tommorrow we will ride in the "Georgia ride to the Capitol". An advocate ride that gets about a 1000 riders, on a weekday! Great opportunity to network our buisnesses to the ATL community.

Just like home
Well, they said it could snow in ATL. It did. 2 inches, big wet flakes. I still had studs on my fixed mtb, so out the door I went. Here I am in the decatur cemetary. There were many Decaturites out and about enjoying the snow. Every street had families out making snow people, walking, playing with the dogs. During the ride there was thunder snow with lightning! Tommorrow it'll be 55, warming into the 70s by weeks end. Ahhhh.

Free tours
As a way to get local input, I'd like to offer any local recreationalists some free tours or trainings. As we get our businesses rolling here in Atlanta, it would be in my best interest to get your opinions on conditions inside the perimiter. Call 9203712227 to reserve a spot or discuss. PLEASE?

Little 5 intersection
Another great day. Walk in the AM. Went to an exibit at Atlantic Station "dialog in the dark", a 1 hour tour in pitch blackness. Wild. Then a nice afternoon bike ride. Here's a dude cruisin' thru little 5 on a high bike. 55/sunny. Light breezes. Is it still winter?

Disc's fly
We are settled. Took the day off. Went for a nice AM exploratory run. Then toured the city showing Ben the sites. Then we went disc golfing at Redan park. Here is hole 15, fairway to heaven. Very straight course, lots of trees, no hills. This will be a nice course for speed disc...

Daily shot
Ben came in today to help unload the trailer. DONE! I picked him up at MARTA with the pedicab. The garage is coming along well. Pedicabs are ready to roll after we get settled. Got out for a ride this afternoon. Here is a driveway in the Oakhurst district. Did I mention its hilly here?
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
What a day!
Two full days of unpacking the trailer that 5 of us took 3 hours to load! We took a nice bike ride break this afternoon. Here is a huge mansion in a very old section of downtown decatur. Each balcony has ceiling fans (4). Look for the huge deck out back! Tonight there was some tornado action, T storms around the area. Very strange for us in Feb. Bringing the pedicab out tommorrow. Sunny/52 degrees

Pams BD
We got our kids out for Pams birthday breakfast ride. Here we are at the flying bisquit. Then we took a nice two hour ride on PATH, and some streets around our city exploring. Temps @ 45 start. 55 finish. Happy BD Marty!

Ahh. Home
First ride complete. 64 degrees. Downtown decatur. Street performers. 1 guy doing fixie tricks. Saw a fully loaded tourer. This is our front door.

Last river ride
On Saturday we ventured out onto the duck creek one last time. Big sun, 42 degrees, and wet ice. Here are our bikes under a railroad trestle taking a break. The ATV traffic was fairly heavy, but they provided a nice track to ride in. I'm sure we won't be doing this in georgia.
Last weekend in GB
Our last weekend in GB was a good riding one. 42 degrees on Sat, 38 on Sun. This pic is from uwgb looking toward the mouth of the fox river. The fog is the snowpack melting. Most of the storm sewers are covered by snow & ice, so there are lots of big puddles. Wonderful, wet, & wild

final GB weekend
BIG thaw going on here now. For this first time in two months, it was above freezing at night. Rivers might be getting too mashed to ride anymore. Todays road ride will require full waterproofing, bike and body. Waterbed going this morning to craiglist, then I am riding from 1030 ish until3-4pm...this is the final weekend of our 52 years here...wedensday the 11th we pack the trailer, party at Titletown Brewery 7pm to 10pm, leave for Decatur GA the 12th or 13th..THEN we will have some hills to ride in....

Deck art no more
Get this. After 10 years in this apt, we had collected 8 pieces of deck art (bikes). Our landlord told us last weekend he has been fighting the city the last 2 months. They want them taken down. A 'blight' on the neighborhood, they say. Well we're moving anyhow, so here 4 of them are at thw curb. Any guesses how long they will be curbside?

Pay back is sweet
Here is my buddy NJ & I on the duck creek today. After 5 days below zero, 12 degrees felt good. 3 inches fresh snow added to the enjoyment. 3 more weekends in titletown. Watch for last weird outing. A request for the 5 hour ultimate was placed. ??

super sub zero riding
This week has been the super frigid!! Today I rode to the dentist, 830am, minus 13 degrees, wind to back. (-40, but couldn't feel.) On the way home, into that -40 windchill, and I must say you wouldn't last long if you didn't have the gear. My visor kept the wind off the glasses, but when I looked up, they'd tear and freeze instantly! Should of had the ski goggles on!! OR, we will be in Decatur the weekend of Feb 15, moving in! Just over three more weeks of this shit!!
Sunday, January 11, 2009
Saturday ride
The ice is cleared from the streets, but it is more peaceful on the east river. Yesterday was about 10 degrees, sunny, windchills about 0 to -8. There is a 1 to 2 inch crusty sandlike snow on the edges, so the best riding was on the snowmo/atv tracks. In Georgia, 60 degrees.

Moving chronicles
Jan 5....it rained for 10 hours on Jan 3 afternoon/evening, then temps drop to zero, windchills 20 below, and it stayed cold. Todays high was 12, but sunny. We've had two days of total ice here in GB. As a pedestrian, forget it. As a cyclist, if you do not have studded tires, forget it. I am down to 12 lbs of air pressure in both front and back to get maximum studdage. Frozen river riding has been good this last week. Now the sidewalks are the best. Selling off all unused belongings and readying for move to Decatur in February. I am using this blog also as a diary of our move from a #2 cycling state, to #48. #2, yea right!!

What a treat!
This guy was paddleboarding on the upper fox today. Here he is strapping up his stumpjumper xtracycle for return home in GB. Very urban! He has a prototype 'grill-o-cycle' for a bicycle tailgate. Cool stuff. Hope to see him on the ccc. And by the way, what a sweet day it was for outdoor activity.

CCC updates
WEIRDO's might take notice of some new events coming to the annual chocolate clunker classic bicycle parade, starting at 10am saturday october 18 from KaVarna. There will be the weird sprint, a 3/4 mile charge of the Ashwaubenon trail as fast as your clunker can go. (or you?) Next up is the slow ride. Forward movement required for a short distance. Last one moving wins. Next challenge is the popular skid contest, on St Joseph's hill!! Then to top all, the traditional "round-up". Saddle up, partner......Questions?

levis epic
Levis Trow trails east of Neillsville were the site of a WEMS event (usually 12/6/3 hours) that included instead a 100 mile, 50 mile, 25 mile option, and the state championships for singlespeeders at 25 miles. I entered the 100, and finished 75 miles in11 hours 12 minutes. (TYVM). You had to do 1hr30m laps (12.5 miles) to finish in 12 hours. Organizer "allowed" for light and kept course open for 13 hours. Based on your splits, if you were back by 730pm, you "might" be able to go out for one more. I "could" of done another lap, but I had enough fun. Toad Road & Upper Hermosas downhill, and the Switchback uphill were by far the highlights of the lap. Weather was perfect. 60's. Rain in the morning where you knew it was raining out, but you weren't getting wet. Strong winds in the morning, gentle breezes by afternoon. Bluebird evening. These trails are as epic as they come. Actually, they are IMBA epic designated trails. Get over there and ride, but call me...I wanna go too

thoughts on duathlon?
The latest WEIRD multisport is biking/speed disc golf duathlon. Ride to determined course, speed 18 holes. Mass start. Clock stops for participant when they finish 18th hole. Fastest time with lowest score crowned WEIRD'est. Riders must carry gear, lock, and at least two discs and mark all shots (discs provided by weird). Off road versions will be hosted by the Winter Park Sports facility near Kewaunee. Triangles course has option of off road, but is it faster?? What could we call this workout?

clunkers
If you need a clunker for saturdays coffee clunker cruise, we gots some here for you to use. Our goal for the ride is to have everyones ARSE sore!!
Winter still hanging on
Back home, back on goes the woolies. WOW! Half a year of winter! Is this what global warming is? I am seeing more people out on the roads and trails.
Camp open May 1. Triangle is 80% open....some of the steep hills are still greazy. He-Nis-Ra should be good, but have not been there yet. Riverview is said to be in good shape, as should be Winter Park.....Do you know all these trails??
Roads are pretty clean now. Lots of pot holes and cracks are noticed this time of year, too. Skills to work on would be the bunny hop, panic stop, and the rock dodge...
It's an excellent time of year to work on wind gusts and riding into wind. (with the wind is too easy).
Tours and skill classes are available 5 nights a week, as well as 7 days a week. WEIRD works out on your schedule. To schedule one, call 371-2227

Gone
Those whole 10 days in Atlanta.....GONE. That is one hell of a nice town!! My plan to blog daily fell apart...We parked the van when we got there, and never used it again for 8 days. Very pedestrian friendly, also bike friendly ( they drive fast, but they're nice, IF YOU FOLLOW THE RULES). There were a lot of BAD cyclist down there. It was very hilly for cycling ALL the time!! It is the #2 reason more locals dont ride. We rode a path from near downtown, all the way out to Stone Mountain. (24 miles one way) There is this huge rock out in nowheres land?? Massive relief statue in the rock that makes Rushmore seem small. We rode the 6 mile "loop" of the park....WOW!! Shaded most of the way around, one lane for traffic, a bike lane, a runner lane, and a sidewalk.. It was as close to heaven as I've been on a bike, ever....then we rode back to downtown (24 miles). We felt the Decatur area was what we were looking for. Unlimited job potential. I want to duplicate what we wanted to do here. What do you think of when you hear urban guide??

Annual Coffee Clunker May 3
The annual CCC is May 3...9am is the time from KaVarna. This ride is meant for clunkers, classics, cruisers, muscle or pixies, or any human powered vehicle, as we will ride 13 miles in three hours, stop at 3 coffee shops, and have a parade pace ride inbetween. No fees for this ride, but this is an introduction to what a WEIRD tour could be like...

WEIRD Tours
OK...lets not think of anything as training. Training is tough. How 'bout we use the word tour as the description? Training is just a benefit. I see way too many "skiers" who are out there just for the workout. "Bikers" who think commuting miles are junk miles? Runners who always run the same pace, same course, same way, same time, etc....By going into tour mode, thinking of the exercise as a adventure with a specific goal at the end, WEIRD puts the joy back into our games of choice.
WEIRD Tours are being booked now from this blog. WEIRD Tours can be combined for multiple sports. WEIRD Tours can have an educational aspect. Watch for more info. Three free tours for the first three weirdo's to respond to this post

best riding in the city
Riding around the last few day, I realized the Kress Trail is the best "in city" winter cycling venue. Still need studs for the best effect, but it is plowed and traffic free. I have used this trail many times this year, going back and forth. Twice with 2 or better inches of snow, no other tracks!! Ahhhhh......also, the Cora Vanderperren trail around East high is plowed, making a nice loop combined with the Kress.

winter returns
THIS is the best snow season in decades!! It wont stop! Bicycling conditions are in one word - messy - very tough conditions since before christmas!! I have only "1" road ride with dry roads and partial sun...... river and bay ice had about a 10day season so far...yesterdays warm slop sent what was bettering conditions on Bairds Creek bye-bye. Good snowshoe running in all parks and preserves. Skiing has been available since like November. All Wisconsin trails are top notch! Telefest happening this weekend up at the Porkies. superb conditions on Lake Superior. Get out and get WEIRD. Going out riding today to test the alleyways....main roads are aweful wet and salty and cruddy and hostile, but its better than a trainer anytime!

Text only
1st try sending text from mobile. Having hard time motivating to get out and ride. I need your help. Call for a weird workout
brain freeze promotes new WEIRDness
holy schnikes!! Last night NFC game was freeking cold! 77,000 packer fans,(ok, some were from NY) and 5 pedicabs. We lasted until about 10pm, when temps were negative 8, windchills about -25, give or take a few degrees. WEIRD could be described as dumb or stoopit when venturing out in those conditions. But with the right gear, you're ass will be saved. Call for more info...
Upon thawing out, I was gonna post something when I ran across the option of mobile blogging. My new mobile email is weird@att.blackberry.net. I am also gonna post from my handheld, possibly with pics. The only thing that will stay the same this year is change....

whats too cold?
Yikes!!!!! -30 windchills. Temps of -3 degrees. Is it too cold to workout outside? Not if you're WEIRD. Here are some guidelines.
If possible, get deep into the woods
Plan routes that are very sheltered. I like using city alleys when its real cold.
Fight the wind while you're warm
Layers, layers of clothing. Carry extra clothing and space to shed clothes
Tell someone the 'plan'
Call someone to join you. There is safety in numbers
Todays WEIRD WO is backcountry skiing @ triangle or HeNisRa. Call 371-2227 to hook up

january thaw/snow/freeze
Its been a wacky winter so far....Last thursday morning the roads were clean and dry! Perfect. By Friday things were back to normal....wet/snowy/slush....Saturdays packer playoff game at Lambeau would of been OK "IF" the unnanounced snow storm didn't hit during the game. Over 2 inches came down pretty hard as the 6 pedicabs working the game laughed and kept on working...it was a tough ride home....River and ice riding are now out as last weeks thaw and a wet snow over the water makes them unridable...running's OK, but you will get sloshed...not enough snow for 'shoeing....skiing should be marginal, but doable....Keep a weird attitude, it'll be over soon

how to train for a 24 hr mtb
Ride a bunch. Simple. But seriously, as this will be my first time ever doing an event as a member of a team, there has to be a different strategy. As riders will take just over an hour to do a lap, I have been training 2 to 5 times a day, short and sweet workouts. Most workouts are under 3 hours, with a lot in the 60-90 minutes. Also riding when tired seems to be paying off. Does anyone have an opinion on this one?

Still out there, where have you been
I haven't posted in a while, but WEIRD is going strong this season. Training for 24@9, 100 mile race @ Neilsville, and Fat Tire. Road cycling skill classes have seemed to be exclusively for fixies?? Can you ride your fixie well? Call 371-2227 for a training.

ROADIE 101
A urban bicycle riding skill class is now open for enrollment. Most training should be done on the pave as we thaw out. You need to "drive your bike". Same roads, same rules, same rights! Period. It is the safest way to ride. I can prove it. Classes are scheduled around your schedule/training
DORT frozen & open
With the cold upon us AGAIN, DORT is frozen and 90% open..riding friday until 100 pm....Tours available

conditons and activities
As of 3-8 most roads are in decent shape... minor side roads are still snow covered. I am amazed how beneficial studded tires have been for riding this year. They really allow you to ride in almost any weather. I think that new salt/brine mix they throw on the roads now is helping, but I wonder what the health risk is in breathing that shit?? Especially being passed by large trucks/buses who will not yield/slow for a cyclist or pedestrian. The worse the conditions are, the more you should take your lane....gonna downhill ski on sunday @ Marquette Mt....Saturday should be an epic ride...who's in?
